Fran Romano is a ceramic artist based in Canberra, working from her home studio. Her journey with ceramics began many years ago, but it was during more serious study at the ANU School of Art + Design in the 2010s that she made the decision to pursue her practice full-time. Alongside her studio work, Fran engages in casual community teaching and maintains a design practice. With a background in Social Work, she also offers a range of courses focused on mindful, purposeful making for well-being.
Drawing on her Southern Italian heritage, Fran finds inspiration in the textures and patinas of Europe, and has a deep fascination with its archaeology and history. A self-directed residency on the Greek island of Skopelos in 2017 had a profound and lasting influence on her work.
Fran creates abstract vessels using stiffened, textured clay slabs. Her intuitive process involves layering and surface treatment to evoke a sense of history and time. These vessels reference both natural and built environments and explore themes of loss, longing, and nostalgia.
Romano’s work invites contemplation, offering a space to explore both physical and metaphorical interiors. Her vessels ask to be looked into—and for the viewer to look within themselves.
This work is part of the Art Auction Exhibition at Belconnen Arts Centre, on display until 30 November. Successful bidders will be contacted after the auction with payment instructions.
